Arts – Lower Elementary
PreK-K: Listening (music-based stories, activities, etc), Singing, Dance, Basic Rhythmic skills w/percussion instruments, and Basic Life-skills through music (self-control, patience, taking turns, etc).
Grades 1-3: Continue to build from the preprimary years, but with an emphasis on performance. Students are given the opportunity to play instruments in a more structured context learning how to play/work as a group. Basic Rhythmic notation, Basic theory, and group-based performance activities are all employed.
Elementary art (grades 1-3) is designed to foster creativity, problem-solving skills, and nurture an appreciation for all things artistic. Students will learn about the elements of art with hands-on use of various art-making materials. Color, line, shape, texture, and balance are combined in weekly sessions to allow for a variety of creative experiences. Students are taught to “see”, not just “look”. They are encouraged to appreciate others’ work as well as that of famous artists present and past. Each student is viewed as an individual and cheered to do their best at their ability level. Students are made to feel that their creativity and artwork are important to the art world.
